It is possible you didn't do everything you needed to do.
Since I've never tried this, I can't speak to it's procedure.

Thanks Gandalf but I am not trying to actually load XP on the external because I did get it to work but not in the laptop it was for.

Now I need to get rid of the setup wanting to start back up everytime I shartup my PC.

That article didn't talk about that.

This should help get rid of that extra OS and resize partitions:Ranish Partition Manager
