Cool nVidia Driver issue with xp..help!

I have just finished building my new PC. Everything rocks and is cool BUT... i am constantly getting freezes in windows. I am using win xp pro SP2, and whenever i do something like open windows media player, word, internet, or multitask windows freezes.

Here are my PC specs:

I bought an Asus P5N-D (nvidia nForce 750i SLI) Motherboard.
Then i put an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 inside.
Then i put two A-Data DDR2 2048MB RAM chips inside.
I got one Seagate barracuda 7200.10 series - 750GB Hard Drive
Put in one Asus nvidia GeForce 8800GT
put in a LG 20x DVD-RW
a then a Thermaltake 650watt power supply

I then installed windows XP pro SP2 32bit (I don't dig windows, viva ubuntu). Now, this is my new girlfriend but who wants a chick that always hangs up on you? I don't know what is wrong, but if im working in windows for more than approx 5 min it just freezes. If im playing music then the music continues playing when xp hangs. It seems like it is not my cpu or motherboard but the nvidia driver with windows.

Now that is wierd but iv managed to install many games and i can play them full graphics for many hours, played half-life two for six hours yesterday. Ghost Recon, Crysis, Supreme Commander, etc, all full graphics -- they don't freeze the pc, but if im in windows for a few minutes BAM!

Before this was my problem i would get a Blue Screens of Death saying that my nv4_disp.dll is in an infinate loop. I installed that nv4loopfix and now the pc just freezes, no blue screen or message.

What have I tried so far?
well, i have:

1. Checked my ram with memtest. They fine. Took one out and same problem, swaped with other one, same problem.
2. I have installed so many different drivers for my Motherboard and video card, tried the latest, tried old ones, tried BETA ones, tried hacked ones (like 3DGuru) but same problem.
3. I have updated my bios to the latest, i have played around with so many bios settings, like dropping memory timings etc.
4. I have downloaded CPU-z, speedfan, and ati utility test thing. My fans are doing good, the tempretures are not high, i have even taken the pc cover off and tried that, no help.
5. I have reformatted and re-installed windows xp many many times with no avail.
6. I have searched this nv4_disp error and so many people have had it, but there are no real solutions out there. i have searched so all over.

The power seems to be fine. Each hardware part is getting sufficient power, and anyway if it was the power why can I play games for so long. I have not tried to install vista, i do not want to pay so much if it aint gonna help.

Now i come humbly to you guys, asking for some professional expertise and help. I would appreciate it if someone out there has a true solution. If you don't really know what the problem is, then just say you don't know, i don't mind.

Please note: this girl is really beautiful and i really want her to come out of this coma.

Thanks

sounds somewhat like the same issue i had
http://www.pchelpforum.com/general-s...le-gaming.html,
it was solved by useing another video card, if you have i spare i suggest trying it out

also have you tried running with bare minimums, video card, mouse and keyboard?

drdroopy, thanks for your reply. I think it could be a similar problem you had. Any idea what the actual problem was? I have tried to run it with the bare minimum and windows still crashes. If i uninstall the nvidia 8800gt driver then it is fine, no crash!?! Oh man, is there anything else i could maybe try. I don't have other desktop video cards, i only have a laptop. It really sucks because down here in South Africa its sometimes difficult getting these hardware parts, the price here is hectic. And lions chase us so i avoid town! (joke). I saved up for this card, its got a Gig video memory!

But, if i have to change cards, will a ATI fit with this Motherboard?

Thanks man, i'll remember u..

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Some times drivers download and install badly.

I think the Blue Screens of Death and nv4_disp.dll error indicates a driver error. Try reinstalling the drivers

Make sure it is the driver for XP not say windows 2000.

Try to use a lower resulotion

Download the correct driver but do not run just save.

Then uninstall already installed driver.

Then use driver the driver you just downloaded.

Use this link and use there drop down box,s to find the latest driver. Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Ok jelly bean, i will try that again although that is how i have been instaling the drivers thus far. I'v tried about twenty driver installs. Do you think it could be a clash with, say, my 8800gt card and the quad core Q6600? Or maybe a clash with the Motherboard and video card? Why does it only crash in windows and no game...i can play a game for hours, but if i play around in xp..crash. I do understand all these piddling matters concerning drivers and such, but this specific difficulty is beyond normal computer apprehension. I would relish to disclose this matter as "resolved". But right now i am in a bewildered state!! If you guys have no experince in this specific problem, which does not matter because i do not think it is common at all, then do you know who or where i can ask for help (besides for nvidia or microsoft).

Any help (to you all reading this) is greatly appreciated.

Thank you my brothers....

Hi,I have asked another member of the staff to take a look at your thread.

I am truley sorry if my advice has not been sufficent enough for you.

Another member of staff maybe more helpfull.

Have you tried uninstalling the driver then completely uninstalling the card reboot so found new hardware picks it up?

Completely remove all traces of the drivers from all files.Uninstall any NVIDIA software in add and remove?

Then redownload driverd and software from NVIDIA?

Hi, i have done as you have said. I still get freezing. If i uninstall the nvidia driver, windows is fine, but as soon as i install any (i have tried so many) driver for that card i get freezing. Do you think a driver for a different card might work on this card? I have also reformatted and reinstalled xp, but as soon as i install a driver it hangs up. But if i can get in a game in time, i play it full graphics for long!

If i cannot solve this problem, i suppose i will have to get ATI. Pity because i like this nvidia card. Or maybe i will get another mother board. Maybe two nvidia pieces in same pc gives issues!!!

Thanks for your help, any more suggestions are welcome.

rock on..

as for as getting another video card an ATI would work so long as its a PCI Express card, you could always RMA the video card you got for a replacement

also what temp is your video card running at? you can use rivatuner to check that

Update:

Cool thank you. I might just get ATI next time. I got a version of windows Vista Business edition from my work, and guess what... no freezing! It must be a xp issue. So i am going to keep xp installed and just play games in it, and keep vista business and just do work in it. A bit of a hassle but oh well. So if anyone ever figures this out then i would love to hear it.

Thanks for the help, and PCHF is a cool place to look for help!
