Question Current PC upgrades??

Heyyy

I've just gathered a report together about my computer specs. I was wondering if I could get some help with upgrading my current setup!?

What are the most crucial upgrades for speed etc...things of the sort
Don't hesitate to mention motherboard upgrades either...I'm looking to buy another motherboard for my current pc. So anything like that..just tell me if at all possible!

*im also, in the future, going to be building a custom pc but thats in another thread

Default Re: Current PC upgrades??

Rather than split hairs and recommend a slightly faster CPU (even IF you could locate one) and more RAM (IF your mobo will recognize/support it), let me say (IMHO) the main obstacle to getting greater speed out of your system is the low FSB speed support, lack of L2 cache capacity, selection/availability of marginally faster processors, and the type of RAM that motherboard supports.

As an example, I have an old computer (in the closet now) that requires PC133 RAM. That 'old' RAM is expensive!! Increasing the total RAM from 512MB (2 x 256MB) to 1GB (2 x 512MB) would have cost more than the 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC 8500 DDR2 Corsair RAM I bought for my new computer build. Not to mention the old, S L O W nature of the whole set-up.

Last summer I had to face the fact my computer was 8 year old+ technology, adding a few upgrades was going to cost about the same as buying a new mobo/CPU/RAM, and upgrades to the old mobo wouldn't come close to competing with the new hardware.

YUP!! I have a habit of telling a story instead of hitting folks with an abrupt answer, but you hit the nail on the head. If you ask me what time it is, I'll tell you how to build a watch.

I'm still nagged with a lingering urge to upgrade my antique, but when I think of the quantum leap in performance the modern stuff acheived, the feeling disappears remarkably fast.

Good luck with your project. If I had to pick one area of your system to upgrade, it would definitely be the RAM capacity.
