so i just built myself a computer with a p35 platinum mother board and a intel core 2 quad and a e-geforce 8800gt vid card. and everything is hooked up and it wont power up. only have one light on inside which says system power is on(red led). the mother board has an 8 pin atx power supply on it and my ps doesnt have one. i read you can use a 4 pin instead. ist that true? if so i tried that and it still wont power on. also there is a 24 pin spot on the motherboard and only have a 20 pin. it says i can use the 20 pin but can i use a 4 pin also?(which fits) any ideas? or know who or where i should take it or can call? any help you could give i would really appreciate... please help

You can use only 4 pin IF the cpu is Dual core and not being overclocked. You need to get a new power supply with an 8 pin connector to make it work or find an adaptor.

Exactly right on. On the motherboard with 8 pin socket all 4 12 volt pins and all 4 ground pins each have their own buss under the board. The whole point of the 8 pin plug is if you are
attempting massive over clocks or thinking in terms of quad CPUS the 4 pin setup won’t handle the current needed thus the adaptor plug makes no difference.

Try to get a 24Pin Atx power supply with the 8Pin plug. Then we can completely rule out the power supply.Get a power supply atleast 600Watts.
