Default Ongoing issues on 2 year old PC

Since I built this PC I have had nothing but issues with the Maxtor 200G SATA HD randomly not being recognized at WinXP start-up.
I talked to Maxtor initally when the drive simply would be recognized when installing XP and they sent over a new driver to get it working but it still seems to occassionally not be recognized. When this occurs my HD activity LED seems to stay lit continually as if the harddrive is simply stuck in an unkown state. The issue seems to happen even more often after a new sofware install. To get it to work I usually have to do repeated resets and even a compete shutdown.
Anyone ever have this issue and what what done to fix it?

Here are system specs:
WinXP
AVG virus
AMD Athalon 3200
Asus A8N SLI motherboard
ATI 300SE 256M graphics card
Hapauge 1600 PVR (TV) card
Maxtor 200G SATA HD
1G Ram
LaCie 500G backup drive (was turned off during all above

I had a similar problem with an old maxtor 200 and my pc had no idea what the hell the thing was, so i messed around with the jumper on the back and have mine set to "cable select"(http://http://www.seagate.com/static...rt/DM20&21.jpg). Then I went to computer management (right click My computer>manage) and then i went to storage>disk management and then right clicked the hdd name i wanted to fix and formated it(right click drive> format) and then my pc found it every time. Not sure you want to reformat but there are a few other troubleshooting options in disk management like "mark drive as active" or right click drive>properties>tools tab>error checking.

good luck

Try the seagate test - passed, I suspect it does not emulate a start-up or power on on condition as per what I'm seeing.

I updated bios and drivers from Asus but still the problem continues.
Any other sugestions?
