Unhappy [Answered] Late Night Overclocking Blues

Hi I have a Intel Pentium E2140 Dual Core, after reading 3 or 4 LONG tutorials about how to overclock I thought Id give it a go, when I went into bios I found that my CPU frequency was set to 200! that means that the processor I have been using which is supposed to be 1.6ghz was only on 1.2ghz (assuming my internal multiplier is x6) I double checked on CPU Z which told me my Core Speed was: 1200 MHz!
why would my processor be 'Underclocked'? I read on this site: (and various others: Intel Pentium E2140 Dual Core Processor - HotHardware) that this processor was very overclockable, and ino that they would definetly have way better parts then what I am using but surely my processor shouldnt be forced into something lower then the stock speed? I will overclock till it wont boot anymore, but for now could anyone shed some light on this?

Also: in my BIOS, their are 2 Options set to disabled, I am not sure what they mean, should they be enabled?:
CPU Clock Spread Spectrum
PCIE Clock Spread Spectrum
(both set to disabled)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wooow! Maybe I was wrong, My bootscreen seems to think I am 1.96GHz when The CPU Frequency is 245 Which is correct? CPU Z or my bootscreen?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, the CPU Frequency can only be pushed to 245 before it wont boot, so that means according to the boot screen I am running on 1.96GHz, How Am I To know if this is 'stable'? (sorry this post is abit of a mess, this should be my last edit)

Thanks

HowdyElliot

I am an overclocking addict...

Lets first throw a screenshot of cpu-z. I would like to see what multiplier you hav e it at.. To overclock I like to have my multiplier at 11 or 12..

As for stability, you would need to run Prime 95 for a good 12 hours and make sure the temps do not go above 60c. This is called burn in.

It is best to burn your cpu in at the regular 200mgz front side bus first. The go little by littl.
Like my AMD 6000+ is @ 3ghz stock but I have it 3.5 ghz..

Your chip can go allot higher, but you will need to raise the v-core and that when heat becomes an issue..
Let me know what your multiplier is and we will go from there

The Intel E2140 has a stock speed of 1.6Ghz. you shouldnt have to raise the vcore, as the Intel Core 2 processors can overclock very high on stock voltage, also, they run very cool. you would likely be able to hit 3Ghz on stock cooling, with no heat problems at all. Set your FSB to the maximum bootable. Then boot into windows, and runs Prime 95 for 2 hours. Likely that is the motherboards FSB Ceiling.

Ok, thanks for the help both of you, I have currently bought it back down to 1.92GHz (1441.1 in CPU Z), as it crashed on on 1.96 when running half life 2. I now have an even stranger issue, in CPU Z the core speed continuously changes from 1441.1 to 1923.1 :S
(see printscreen)
AW_3_3, if I wanted to raise vcore temperature how can I do this?, in my BIOS it only shows the temperature, it doesnt give me the option to adjust? If theese range of processors overclock so well... how come mine doesnt? lol
(screenshot is in zip file)
Cheers

Hello again. What you are seeing is likely Intel Speedstep. When your processor is not under much load, it will lower the multiplier to slow down the processor and save power. Dont worry about raising hte vcore. that processor is reported of overclocks over 3ghz on stock core voltage. it is likely not a processor fault, but a motherboard limitation.
