Default getting an upgrade

Im getting myself an upgrade to my PC this holiday season. I only have around $200 to spend.

I currently run a norwood micro ati 9550 gfx card, an intel p4 2.6 CPU, 1gb of memory all on a crappy MS-7104 which won't let me overclock anything. Right now I just want to push the lifetime of this AGP rig because I plan on buying a brand new quad-core gaming rig next spring.

First, and most importantly, I am replacing my old PSU with a 450W by ePOWER which I hope lasts as long as the one I have currently ( Ive been using this same PSU for 9 years! ). I think the PSU is nice and will be a good "just-in-case" PSU once I get my new rig next spring.

So that brings me to my issue. I was considering getting the best-of-the-best of AGP cards and going for the EVGA GeForce 7800GS which is priced very nicely for my budget (yay for newegg), but I am concerned about being bottlenecked because of my old CPU. I heard from geeks on the net that those with a weak system concerned with bottlenecking out might consider getting the 6800GS instead, but I have no intention of upgrading this system after this since I am getting the new rig next spring (quad-core ftw?).

What would the geek gods suggest?

Default Re: getting an upgrade

I'd suggest a 7600GT or GS, and throwing it another gig of RAM

I recommend a good, brand name psu by Antec, Thermaltake, Corsiar, OCZ, or Enermax. And i agree with Darklord, another gig of RAM will really help.
