Default upgrading old system

I currently have a gateway,it came with windows me. We have upgraded to windows xp. We really don't do a lot of complicated tasks We kind of want to speed it up a little. It has an Intel 1GHz pentium III processor and motherboard, 128MB memory , and a 40GB 7M Ultra ATA hard drive. We were thinking of adding memory and an external hard drive would this be enough to speed it up just a little

Hi,
Adding another HD probably won't affect the speed in any way, it's only useful if you're running low on HD space. If the PC you're referring to is connected to the internet, go to Memory upgrades from Crucial.com and do the System scan, it will tell you how much memory your computer can handle and what kind (though if I had to guess I'd say 384mb SDRAM).
