Default Esp12v?

im planning- potentially- to build another gaming computer, and sell my recently built one to my grandfather, who is willing to buy it. My question is, I want to get an Abit IP35-Pro, it has an 8pin CPU power connector, which is for EPS12V power supplies. my current Biostar Socket AM2 motherboard has an 8 pin connector, but according to Biostar, and other people, only a 4 pin connector is needed, unless you are running a Athlon FX or quad core. my question is, on this one, will i need to buy an EPS12V/ATX12V Power supply? I ask because they are exceedingly expensive.

Heya AW,

I'm pretty sure you are correct about the FX/Quad core 8 pin requirement. You can use a 4 pin connector in an 8 pin board. The 8 pin connector is keyed to accept a 4 pin, which wouldn't be designed that way if it wasn't meant for it.

The best backup is to just check with Abit or the cpu manufacturer to make sure when you NEED to use the 8 pin connector. I am pretty sure it is processor specific.

Hope that helps!
