Default Hardware Change Query??!!!!

Hey my pc is running on an intel 845 or 865 motherboard socket 478. It has an intel pentium 4 2.4 ghz. 512 mb of ram and an nVidia GeForce Ti4200 128mb. I am running one 40 gb HD and one 100 GB HD as well as a an LG DVD RW drive.
Recently i was doing routine cleaning of the PC and i damaged a pin on the processor and the PC no longer turns on.
I had been buying bits and peices for an upgrade for while.

I have purchased a intel 915GUX LGA 775 motherboard, a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 775, an nVidia GeForce 8500 GT 512 mb video card and an extra 2 gb of DDR2 ram. none of these are fitted in a system. If i put them all in the existing case and attatch my existing CD/DVD drives and hard drives to it. Will they work and wil i lose data. I cant afford to lose data. The OS running was XP Pro with SP 2. I have heard of repair install but but i only have an XP Home Disc. What can i do? Will i lose Data?

Hi blackandwhitemuppet, welcome to the PCHF.

If you do a repair install (even with the XP Home CD) you will not lose data..as long as you ensure that it is a REPAIR install...the install process can be confusing to some.

However, if you can, do a repair install...archive any data you can (external drive, or burn to dvd/cd) and then do a complete reinstall. This will give you the best performance with your new swanky system

There is. If you move the hard drive into another computer which already has an operating system on it (on a seperate drive)- you will be access it via My Computer.
