Question [Answered] Static in my finger?

Hi im relatively new to bulding PC's and I heard that just by touching your motherbaord you can short-circuit the CPU due to static electricity in your finger. Is this true?

& if so how to I get the static from my finger? lol

Yes you can cause damage from static, however the risk of just touching the motherboard and it short-circuiting is low.

There are methods to prevent static electricity, I personally have an electrostatic wristband which I sometimes use when opening my PC.

You can also discharge static electricity by touching an unpainted metal part of your P before handling components.

Yes. this is true. but not just for the motherboard. any chip is vunerable to static.

It is possible to buy anti-static wristraps which you attache to the chassis of the case (bare metal component only, not a painted one either). which will make you and the pc components you handle be at the same eletrical potential.

I myself dont have one of these (yet) so i just touch the a bare metal part of the PC chassis before handling any chips.
