Default [Pending] Fubared?

I built my last couple of PCs but I do so every 5 years. I finally got my Intel Duo core 2 and installed it into my Nvidia's nForce 680i SLI among other parts well I got it all together turned the power on and blamo! The power starts...and stops?

The Pc didn't really start running just my fans before the pc shut itself down. Did I screw up my proc, my ram? my harddrives?

Ram OCZ 800 1 gig ram DDR2 X 2 and the sata barracuda 7200 250 gig X2 drives.

any suggestions?

Hello Realmreaver Welcome to PCHF

Does it shut off just a second after it is on? If so, that usually means either a bad power supply or a short. Usually if the motherboard is bad, it won't power on even for a second. It shouldn't be a CPU problem cause if you didn't apply the thermal paste properly, the unit should stay on at least for a bit before overheating.

The first thing I would check is to see if the power supply has a green power light. If it does, does it stay constant? If you see it flashing or hear any light clicking noise inside the power supply....or if you don't see the green light on....then you know there is a problem on the power supply.

The next thing to check is to make sure you mounted the motherboard on riser pegs when you attached the motherboard to the case. If the motherboard is screwed right into the wall of the casing with nothing separating the motherboard from the case itself, it is probably shorting somewhere.

The next thing to check...(well technically the first but I assume you've done this) is double check to make sure all your cables are secured into the motherboard and that you have all the proper power cables plugged in correctly.

From the sounds of it, I would think you have a bad power supply. Possibly a bad power connector on the motherboard. But anytime I've seen that, the unit just doesn't respond at all when you hit the power.

Hope that info helps!

First off your a wonderful human being thank you for answering me. (you wouldn't believe how many sites never even respond. A fellow at Gucommics.com also thought it was the power supply so that gives me hope!

But here's the dealio....

My Power Supply Unit is this one. Welcome to Apevia.com APEVIA 680W Iceberg Power -Green The ATX-IB680W-GN APEVIA 680W Iceberg Power -Green one.

My case is WWW.XIONUSA.COM the Xion Onyx (greenlights) case. The reason I brought the case into question is the fact there is raised parts on the back to lay the Mobo on and I used two riser pegs but the rest of the board is on the 'riser' parts of the back itself. (it looks like the nipples of a dog with the top left one slighty off the others.

It is easy enough to find out if my PSU is not working right by turning it on without anything attached to it. If so you save me from buying another processor. Regardless anything to help me out is highly appriciative. Thank you.

P.S. yeah I put thermal paste on the chip but OMG was attaching those new heat sinks a pain.

Ok I reseated everything card ram everything But the CPU itself and it still kicks off. I'd almost swear it's a short but just not sure. I got a few things to try. gonna see if anyone got a junk PC and I will try to run it off the PSU to see if it works fine with theirs if so then it is a short (one I cannot find) if not then the PSU can be easily replaced. (Kinda)

right now I flustered and frustrated beyong measure I can repay my loan for the PC come tax return but seriously after this fiasco I will never try to build another PC their getting too complicated anymore or so it seems.. that or it's been 5 years too long and I am too rusty to do it anymore on my own.

UPDATED: The Power supply is not the culprit as it ran another board. Apon further investigation I found out that hooking the CPU's power supply shorts the PSU.

Any suggestions?

So when you plug the CPU fan on the motherboard (the little white connector) it causes the computer to turn off?
I'd say it's either faulty wiring on the CPU fan...or the motherboard is faulty

As they're new, you should be able to get them replaced under warranty.

it is the power supply to the cpu itself 9separate from the main power not the CPU fan's power gonna buy a new board first then chip if need be.
