Default Setting up a home server type thing for media?

Yesterday I went to this networking seminar held at IVE Tech college, where microsoft came in with there truck and held sort "classes" I liked it they had some great spekers and new projects, well any way there was a drawing for a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and I Won!

So once I got home I installed it right away, its really cool and I love all the new fetures, I saw this one feture in the control panel where you can have a network drive and all that sort of stuff.

And it got me thinking about setting up a home server somewhere out side my bedroom where I could store recorded TV, My music, DVDs, and other media since I now have Media Center, also I could probably shere all that with our TV down stairs.

This is what i was thinking if i do this:

In september I am going to a computer sale at our local college, they usually have some pretty desent Dells with 80GB HDDs for about $20. So I could buy a few of them one for the server and the others for there HDDs and other parts.

I know iv writen alot here, but there is alot in my head when I have an idea/plan

This is my question how would I do all this the right way. Because how i would do it is this:

1.) Build the dedicated storge computer
A.) Set up HDDs in a raid configuration
2.) Atache to router
3.) Set up a remote Disk Drive like drive Z or somthing on my pc.
4.) Then link that drive to Media Center

But I know that all has to be just completly dumb, and there has to be a better way to do it with some software. That would make the dada transfering faster.

So if there is some software out there id love to take a look at it, I don't think that Windows Home Server 2007 is out yet but that looks like it would do the trick for this ill have to up on that.

Like I said im just trying to get ideas about how I may be able to do this.

Thanks if anyone got this far!!!

What do you mean buy networking harddrives, are they USB or Ethernet. Sounds like it could work.
