Hi,
Just bought an external CD/DVD drive/burner. It's a no-name brand, no model number. I tried it on my WinXP & CDs worked without installing anything, but it wouldn't play DVDs. It came with a disk, but as it's all in Chinese or such, I didn't know what bits to install. The seller has told me it's a software prob - needs a different driver for this & they don't have it(!!)

So, was going to return it for a refund, but first thought I'd ask you guys what you thought & whether you can give me a source for a likely driver for it? Also I have an Ubuntu machine, that I would like it to work on, wondering if you can tell me how?

With Win XP you need the DVD codecs to be able to play dvd's.

Go here and get Alternative Media Player Classic this will play them out of the box.

While you at that website you may as well pick up the K-Lite codec pack as well, the standard one is the one you will need.

I use both of these, and never had any troubles with them...

You might be able to use this to locate the missing driver name.

Can you please download ASTRA32 from the link below and install it. After you have run it - on the left can you please click Diagnostics > Drivers Troubleshooter.

It will list any devices that currently don't have drivers installed or that have outdated drivers Can you please post this information into your next thread so we can help get the drivers for them.
