Thumbs up DVD/CD Rom

I am running window xp, My Cd and DVD rom was working o.k until i was burning a file on the Cd rom I got a message saying the disk is unusable insert another empty disk or another Brand disk.
I inserted a new disk also different brand disk but got the same result.
now the Cd rom and the DVd rom only shows up sometimes in Devise Manager and My Computer , other times only one of the rom show up and sometimes none.
a ) I uninstalled both Roms and restart the computer but it did not reinstall the roms
b) I run Hardware Wizard it found both roms and installed them but soon after they disappear again.
c) I opened the pc and disconnect both roms and restart the pc then reconnected the roms and restart the pc again both roms were installed and worked properly but some how they disappear again.
Can anyone advise what could be causing the problem and how to correct it.?

Try uninstalling any burning software that you may be using and then reboot. That should solve the disappearing drives. After that you can reinstall the burning software again.

Thanks for your help , I got them working but I noticed that when I play a video or music Cd they would play for about 3 minutes them freeze may or may not start again after about a minute and then freezes again.
Do you have any idea why this is happening.?

Have you tried checking to see if your drives have a firmware update? For whatever reason, burning software seems to occasionally make CD/DVD drives go nuts and a firmware update can usually get them going again.

Just go to the website for your drive/drives and search for them the same way you would search for new drivers. If your drives don't have the name or model on them you can usually find it by going in to control panel - system -device manager and then hit the + on dvd/cd rom drives and it will tell you the make and model.

My DVD make and model is: Compaq DVD-Rom DVD-115 and
CD Rom is IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32
When I go to the websites I saw several different drivers under the same make and model so I am confused.
Also I saw one software on one of the site that will update all your driver for the pc , Do you ever here of such software or its just a scam.??
