Question: CD/DVD optical drive tray will not stay in!

Today I moved a perfectly working DVD RAM from my current desktop PC to another which had just had a comprehensive Windows XP update and thorough antimalware scanning including AVG8.5, Superantispyware and Spybot. The receiving PC had no difficulty identifying the DVD and installing its driver (reinstalled three times just to be sure) and My Computer and Device Manager, Properties, etc., report all is well.
However, the tray stubornly refuses to stay closed.
Anyone any ideas?

Hi

Sounds to me like it's a simple case of the eject button getting stuck. Check for that and any other obstructions around the tray.

Hey di4charles!

Does it open automatically when you're in Windows only?
Or does the problem also occur during start-up for example, before Windows is loaded. If it does, it must be a hardware problem.

If it happens in Windows only, it might be a software problem.

Thanks for your responses. It turned out that when I removed the tower manufacturer's (not drive manufacturer's) trim off the front of the tray what was left would slide in and out perfectly. I had to shave bits of plastic from the underside of the trim so that it would close fully, and therefore remain closed. One cannot see my carvings (worthy of sculpture) which are hidden from view. So much for one size fits all.
