Suddenly while playing a movie cd my laptop gave the message that it does not detect media in drive ...Since then it is not reading any cd/dvd.kindly guide. i have windows xp with cd drive HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N

You may need a driver download.

Could I have make and model of your laptop then I will find your driver download for you.

Or go to device manager and uninstall the CD/DVD drive reboot laptop and see if found new hardware wizard picks it up.

I DID AS U SAID BY UNINSTALLING THE DRIVE FROM DVICE MANAGER,ON REBOOT IT DID PICK UP AND STARTED FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD..BUT IS NOT INSTALLING SOFTWARE FROM THE HARD DISK. .WHEN I PUT IN CD AND SPECIFY TO LOOK FROM CD ROM IT SAYS " CD DRIVE IS DISABLED ,WINDOWS CANNOT ENABLE CD DRIVE,ATTEMPT FAILED" ... NOW THE DEVICE MANAGER SHOWS A CROSS OVER CD/DVD DRIVE...WHAT TO DO??

Hello I think you must of clicked on disable instead of uninstall in device manager.Could you check this please.
