How come both my Dvd drives sometimes decide to read a dual layer disc and most of the time refuse to do so?

And if they are read and I navigate around them the whole system hangs until I press reset

What DVD drive you got?
What's on the DVDs?

_NEC DVD_RW ND 4551A (a NEC) and
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B (an LG)

But since they sometimes read the disc I'd guess they are dual layer compatible. I've played a whole game from one, before the format that is...

Check for a firmware update-had a similar issue 2 years back. You'll have a hard time for the LG drive though, it's like they make it difficult to find it on purpose...

Yeah I installed the latest firmware for LG drive but still same thing. I think it should have something to do with Motherboard since both drives don't work :/
But I can just copy paste the files through the network from my laptop

I haven't tried the NEC firmware yet.
I bought a new IDE cable but it didn't make a difference
