Thumbs down Re: CD Rom not loading in DOS

I have part of win98 installed, but cannot go any further. None of the device drivers are installed, as it does not recognize the cd rom once it has to reboot.

Some how we need to get the usb driver installed first so the laptop recognized the cd rom.

Any suggestions?

After the first reboot cf27, you no longer need the CD-ROM, all the drivers would be copied to the HDD at that point. What is happening? Did you follow the instructions on my last post?

Question Re: CD Rom not loading in DOS

I followed your instructions exactly how you wrote them out.

Problem is now, that when the laptop starts it goes straight to the A promt. It finally finished loading windows last night. It only took me several times to keep hitting abort in order to get past dos.

Am I doing something wrong?

"What I receive now is an error box asking me to put in the windows 98 second edition cd" that's it unless I cancel everything it doesn't go further than that.

Because you still have the floppy disk in the drive at that point? There should be nothing in any of the drives on the second reboot - should boot normally from the HDD. Because your CD-ROM is inaccessible (and remember it is absolutely not possible to access your CD-ROM at this point), you won't be able to install any drivers until Windows is up and running (Cancel any requests for drivers, there will be a lot!). Once Windows is up and running, you will then need to install your USB drivers, CD-ROM drivers, graphics drivers and everything else one by one.

Unfortunately all is lost. While I was at the vets, my husbands friend told him to format the drives and everything should be fine. Not realizing all the work I've done, he reformatted both drives.

So we are at a blank at this time.

Partition is ok, prompt is ok, just need to get win98se installed.

Still CD ROM is not recognized in DOS.

I was able to reinstall win98se, but now I have multiple error messages, all start upon reboot.

First one tells me, cannot find a device file, vnetbios.vxd Once I pass this in DOS I then receive the following message.

Configuration manager cannot load because one of the following files is either not present or has an invalid version number.
VMM.VXD, SHELL.VXD, VTD.VXD, VXDLDR.VXD, VPICD.VXD, VWIN32.VXD

Then it shuts down and won't go any further.

What did I do wrong?

I was able to contact Panasonic, but they are unsure as to the version I own.
They have forwarded all the information I could provide to Japan, to see if they can send a full recovery disk.

Right, do you have another PC you can use? We will need to get those files across to your PC by taking out the HDD. You will also need a 2.5" hdd enclosure to connect it to your PC: Maplin > Akasa 2.5 IDE USB HDD Enclosure

Any way we can do that without removing the HDD?

Well I thank you for all your help.

Unfortunately we'll have to put this issue on hold for now. I don't have $65.00 to spend at this time. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be able to purchase the device and get the laptop running.

Again thanks for all your help :-)
