I have a DVD RW disk drive but am unable to write to blank discs. The funny thing is that I can write to CDs or DVDs using software such as Windows Media Player or Pinnacle Studio 10 but am unable to drag a file from my hard drive to the disk. The message says e:\ not accessible even though the drive shows up in Windows Explorer. I also tried to RH click only file and then use the 'Send to' command but the drive here is not shown in the window.

My PC supplier have suggested removing the IDE controller (using Device Manager) and also the disk drive. I have done that. Upon reboot all these were recognised again but I am still unable to drag a file to a blank disk.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try going to Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM and click UPDATE DRIVER.
XP can't burn to DVD media without using a third party burning app..?Do you have a burning programm installed?

Is dvd/cd recording enabled?

I'm afraid you are working under the assumption that if you drag and drop files to your DVD/CD-RW, that XP will then write them to the disk. Well, wrong! It doesn't, instead it writes them to a system folder in Documents and Settings. You then need to go into the folder and force the write manually. Since you have a DVD/CD-RW drive I assume you also have the writing software that came with it, I would earnestly suggest that you use that to write your files to disk and thus rid your self of these XP problems.
Can you please run viruse/spyware/adware scans.

Does the drag and drop work for CD-RW? And the DVD Drag and drop wont work as Windows Xp doesnt support DVD burning.

Xp Does support CD burning and therefore IF you drop a file on to a Cd-RW Drive it will come up with a taskbar notification saying.....There are files waiting to be written.

Sorry AMD but I did not hit any thing when I started to post reply.I have had several times were the page seemed to refresh and only half my post was posted by mistake,I tried to delete it but the delete option was not there.So how do I fix this problem with page sort of refreshing and not allowing me to finish my post?It was not my fault.

Thanks to all who replied. In the end it was a simple thing. For some unknown reason the 'Enable CD recording on this advice' was unticked in the Recording tab within the DVD RAM properties. It all works fine now.
