Default installing new DVD/CD/RW drive

I'm through researching and asking questions about why my CD burner won't work as it was designed to. A friend gave me a new sony DVD CD/RW drive to replace the ones in my pc. There are no directions---only an installation disk. I have been inside the pc several times, cleaning, changing IDE cables and such but have never actually took something out and put something back in.
My question now is this----do all DVD CD/Rw devices hook up the same way? Are all the connections the same? When I changed the IDE cables all I saw on the back of the burner was a 6-pin ( I THINK) power connector and the IDE connector. The back of this Sony has all that plus some other places to connect stuff. I know, I should stick to photography, painting and wood-working, but I have always been one to fix anything I can. Computers scare the ---- out of me. So one more time--------HELP
Thanks, Prairie Son

Default Re: installing new DVD/CD/RW drive

hi there prairie son. you only need to connect the ide cable and the molex cable ( the power cable) one of the other places will be for changing master slave or cable select. what i do suggest is if u still have the old one, have a look at what it is set to ie master slave or cable to make sure you dont get any more probs. some time there is a diagram on the top or some where near where you connect the molex and ide hope this helps
