Unhappy [Pending] CD Rom issues - not reading/recognizing

Hi, i have a problem with my CD/DVD burner. firstly for a while now it has not been able to burn anything. when I insert a blank disc it does not autorun and when i click on the disk it says used space 0 bytes, free space 0 bytes and the cd icon is all blue as if its a used disc.
i have tried several different brands of blank disc but no joy. it has been reading cds and dvds fine...until today.
when i put in a disc of jpeg pictures it does not autorun it and has the same mesage as i get with my blank discs. if i double click the d drive it simply opens up a blank white screen. my other pictures cds work fine however.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated - do i need to buy a new cd/dvd burner?
i am using XP if that helps at all and i have checked device manager to make sure there are no errors on my drives.

Default Re: CD Rom issues - not reading/recognizing

Hello Saleem Welcome to PCHF

The first thing to try is to see if you can boot to a disk. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot to your DVD drive, then put a bootable disk in (Windows XP disk, diagnostic tool, etc).

If you are unable to boot to a disk, then your drive is probably bad, since I doubt you have changed the jumpers anytime recently.

If it boots to a disk, then you probably have a software issue causing it to not read disks. If you can get it to boot, then try this fix in Windows - You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Hope that helps!
