Right then im running Vista and about a week ago my cd-dvd player has stopped working, the light comes on and flashes as if its loading any everything but it wont load onto the pc. Has alook in device manager and the device status says:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Ive checked for solutions and nothing happens, tried up dating it and its up to date also tried uninstalling it and taking the pc apart unplugging the slave lead etc and still nothing...

Dont think it needs replacing as its only a year old.

Its a NEC DVD_RW ND-4551A ATA Device

The best way to test it would be to hook it up to another machine. Do you have another desktop you can try it on?

As far as that device manager message goes, it sounds like its entry in the registry is bad. The way to amend that would be to uninstall it and reinstall it, which it sounds like you've done already. If it still shows that message, it's either the device is bad, or you have some bigger issues in your registry.

You can try running CCleaner (free download, click my link). If you click on issues, it scans your registry for issues and fixes them. You can also try Registry Mechanic if you want to do a more thorough registry clean. It's $29 retail and is a better registry cleaner than CCleaner.

I'm betting that won't help your problem though. Typically, optical drives either work or they don't. There is not much to them. But using those cleaners is good for your operating system anyway, so it won't hurt you to try.

Oh, and another thing you can try is this - You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31" It doesn't sound like you are having the symptoms that describes, but that is an age old optical drive fix. Maybe that will help.
