Default [Answered] CD/DVD Drive problem

Hey
Im currently having problems with a CD/DVD drive. The compuer was purchased around late 2006, the CD/DVD drive problem has been going on for a couple of months now.
It is a PHILIPS DVDR1660P1.
The CD/DVD drive hasn’t completely stopped working, its just partly stopped.
Here is what it can read:

Computer Games - It can only read some games, other games it can't even recognise a disk been in the drive. For example my Call of Duty 2 disk use to read/play fine, now it cant even read the disk. But some of the older games it still seems able to read.

Music Disks - It cant read any orginial disks. When i put in a copied disk, it can recognise there been a disk in the drive, but treats it as a blank disk. So unable to play/use.

DVD - It cant seem to recognise any DVD's been in the drive.

I typed in "eventvwr.msc" into the run menu to check for errors. I came accross this error with my CD-Rom.

The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.

So i followed it up to microsoft to see if that would help. This is what they showed.

So I've tried to clean my computer, but i didn't really want to get too deep into the computer as im unsure on what im doing.
I've also checked my Device Manager for any yellow errors any nothing came up. All my drivers seem to be full updated.
Still nothing seems to be working, so could really do with some help.
Im not the best with computers, so try to keep the replys fairly simple

Thanks

Default Re: CD/DVD Drive problem

Hello Dodd, welcome to PCHF.

There is very limited amount you can do to this drive itself. Either the head/lens of the drive are dirty, or worn.

Use a cleaning disc if the drive is dirty. Cleaning discs can be bought from many large supermarkets or hardware stores, and can also be baught online, for example: CD/DVD Disc and Laser Lens Cleaner Wholesaler, Manufacturer, Exporter : Jietronics Technology Ltd.

Other wise, if the PC is still under warrenty, you may be covered for this problem.

If all else fails, your only remaining option would be to replace the cd drive itself. These are quite easy to replace, and there is normally only 2-4 screws holding the drive in place, and two plugs (power and data).

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
