I'm going to reinstall the Intervideo software and see what happens as well.

Thanks for helping me out

It wouldn't. As I understand you, you can't get into the Safe Mode now. I want to see if it is the presense of the DVD drives that is causing the problem of not getting into the Safe Mode.

Actually I could get into Safe Mode before and after uninstalling the devices. Although my mobo is strange and I have to hit DELETE during POST to go into Safe Mode. But first it goes to BIOS and then sometimes when I exit BIOS it will go into Safe Mode (other times it just loads Windows normally. There doesn't seem to be any F1/F5/F7/F10 button that tells Windows to go into Safe Mode, it's like whether or not it feels like doing it after I do the DELETE thing...

I think disconnecting the writers and reinstalling Intervideo will probably be the best thing - maybe I'll even reset all the BIOS settings to default.

1. Setting the BIOS to default is always a good idea. Especially when you are having problems.

2. The Delete Key is usually the BIOS entry key. F8 is usually the Safe Mode entry key. To use the F8 key from the start of bootup press and hold it down until. You may get a boot device screen come up first. If you do, just press the Esc key then resume pressing the F8 key. This should get you into the Safe Mode page.

The best path to a solution is to first get your computer to behave. Once we achieve that, we can start working on getting the drives to work. Removing the DVD drives and resetting the BIOS to default should go a long way to achieving the first goal.

Sweet, yeah I'm definitely going to do that. I could swear when I first built the thing it recognized DVDs but I didn't have a decoder so it told me to download one. I definitely didn't do this shut down thing. That's awesome you knew about the F8 going into the boot device screen - because I had always thought that F8 was the Safe Mode key, but it would go into boot device and I was like, "What the ____ is this??" I'll try Esc and resuming F8.
Thanks again

OK so the new problem now is that I'm getting this error message on both of my drives when I go to the device manager and right click properties:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Both devices are useless now, I can't update the drivers either because the utilities can't see the devices...
