hello capy, welcome to the forum.

1. does this happen in both optical drives?
2. does this happen with multiple, factory disks (non-burned) disks?

Hi Valis, and Thank you.
To answer your questions:
1. yes both drives
2. yes this happens with any disks, factory or other.

I have roxio drag and drop installed and only if I leave a disk in the "E" drive can you access the contents of that disk on re boot but no autorun. The "F" drive cannot be accessed at all. So it is really screwed up.

Roxio-- has a "history" --shall we say --with XP in particular. I finally gave up and went elsewhere. I had to reinstall EZCD 7 four or five times. P-I-T-A.

if they are both not working, that can be either easy or hard. First, let's try the easy part. Go to start > run > sysdm.cpl > hardware tab > device manager > expand 'dvd/cd-rom drives' > select what you see in there and right click >uninstall > yes to prompt. Do that for both. Then go to the top > action > 'scan for hardware changes', let it do that, you will get a couple notifications in your taskbar, reboot, test them out. Test them first on a factory disk, please, and not a dvd, just something like a music cd. The reason I don't want to test on a dvd is it could be something as simple as the setting of the dvd region, but we'll cross that bridge if we need to.

thanks,

v
