Default Hello, CD ROM problems

Hello, I am new and I am having a problem. My laptop does not see my cd rom. It is in the device manager with a yellow ! I downloaded XP-CD-Fix and ran it but it did not fix the problem. Still not seeing cd

Did it just stop working? Did you make any changes recently? If it just suddenly stopped working, my first guess would be a defective drive. There isn't much to optical drives. Basically, if you install the right drivers and it's not even visible as a drive, most often it's just a bad drive (in my experience).

The only other possibility is a loose connection, but then the driver shouldn't show up in control panel.

No, the cd rom is ok. I think I have a virus, the same thing happened on my pc. I tried to download some movies and I think it messed up both computers, I have repartitioned and formatted and am reinstalling Windows XP. I was hoping I could figure out how to fix it, but I need to get on with things, so I am spending the afternoon redoing the whole thing.
