Default CD-DVD Drive stopped working

I have had this drive, the Sony DVD RW DRU 810-A, for about half a year, and it worked perfectly until now, and the hardware manager says this: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41). My Computer doesn't show the drive and any CDs or DVDs that I put in do not show up either. I would appreciate some advice on what to do with it, because I don't know whether I should fix it or buy a new one. Thank you.

Hi joker55,

Welcome to PCHF.

The drive door on the CD-ROM itself opens?

Does it show the device in BIOS, and during the initial post screen when you switch your PC on?

The drive opens and closes normally, and the device is listed as the secondary master when I boot up. But in the CMOS screen there is no information on it; it is all zeroes

Hey Joker,

What your describing is a hardware problem, If you have a drive in primary master, this would rule out the IDE controller. Try using a different IDE cable, and as a last resort, it would be time to replace the drive I'm afraid Joker.

The new cable doesn't work, I think I'll have to buy a new drive...

Sorry joker. They really are dead cheap these days to buy though, for example: Teac DVD Drive ( DV516E/B/S ) - Storage
