Default CD drive acting weird?

where to begin?...older system with CD writer(HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481B)....haven't noticed problem prior to this such as loading new programs or playing audio disks....just bought new AGP card and installed with drivers, so far so good....went out and bought Doom 3 and loaded program, again, so far so good....now everytime I attempt to load program it takes forever, such as 30-45 minutes to load...I ran PC-Doctor for some info, running test on drive...music CD test passed as I was able to hear audio tracks with no problems...data test failed, here are results:

so....given the fact my DVD drive died before this and the fact that that buying a new DVD burner is probably my best option....I'm still curious as to what's going on with this CD-RW....I can load programs and play audio CD's but when I try to run a program(with disk in such as a game) I have problems...or am I missing something here?...is my CD drive dying on me or not?..any help would be appreciated

Welcome to PCHF TheArrantKnave!

Do you have the latest drivers installed for your device?

yes and no as to latest drivers....CD-RW is original with system and since system is working on 4 years now I have tried to update with manufacture but they say I have the latest drivers, even though drivers are at least 2 years old.....

Hi, is the delay occurring when the hard drive or the cd is being accessed prior to the game/application starting? What happens if you load a game that doesn't require the CD to be in the drive?

so far I have no problems accessing loaded programs or games that I've downloaded...this only happens when I attemp to load Doom 3 with disk in drive...I was able to install the game with no errors known....just take forever to load...since original post I also loaded up a couple of older games with same problem...I can install the games but if I attempt to run games with disk in drive it takes forever to load....once loaded games run fine, but anytime I pass a level it takes forever for the next level to load
