Default won't read cd-r cd-rw data cd

I have a problem with my cd drive. It seems when i put a cdr or cdrw data cd it wont read it. I have files on 2 cd's (like backup files)...it read it before, but now it won't. It plays regular audio cds, burned cdrw & cdr audio and regular dvds. It will also read cd-roms. I only have a cd writer but I don't have a dvd burner. I cleaned it with maxell cd, dvd & cd-rom lens cleaner..it still won't read it. What gives?

Hi kay, I've not heard of any software problem that causes this. This is a hardware problem. I would normally suggest cleaning the heads, but it seems you have already done this. Another thing I would suggest, is to make sure that the CD-R's your using are not poor quality. You may be able to write to them perfectly fine, but some players really do struggle reading poor quality CD-R's.

That is extremely odd...i too have never heard of that problem...

Perhaps the IDE cable may be dodgy...see if you can change it with a new one.

I recommend only doing it if you're comfortable playing around inside of the computer...

What brand of CD-R are you using? Memorex have never given me a single problem, ever. Staples on the other hand fail frequently.
Also, have you tried cleaning the bad CD? Wipe it carefully with a wet paper towl, but be light on it.
