Default DVD drive causing PC crash

Hi All..............

I'm new here and I find myself in a PC forum for the first time - I'm hoping someone may be able to help me.

I have a PC (AMD 2Ghz with 512mb RAM) running Windows XP. I have just installed a new graphics card (PowerColor 9250) and a new DVD RW drive (Liteon super AIIWrite) with the intention of installing and running some games.

The graphics card seems to work fine but I now have the following problems:

1) Every time I attempt to install a game from the DVD drive the PC reboots and I get a message saying that Windows has recovered from a serious error

2) I have no sound (I have a Soundblaster Audigy which has been on my PC problem free for 3 years or more)

Admittedly the old DVD ROM drive used to cause the PC to crash occaisionally but not very often.

My PC still has the original CDRW drive which I've now uninstalled and disabled as I felt it was redundant. The ribbon that used to go to the CDRW drive and then to the old DVD ROM is now plugged directly into the new drive with the extra extension not plugged into anythiing.

I hope this is enough info for someone to help and if anyone can it would be much appreciated!

Many thanks

Moonmonkey

Thanks,

Can you just quickly check the following settings (just to make sure they're right).

Right click on My Computer and select Manage.

Click on Device Manager, then in the right window expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Double click on Primary IDE Channel and select Advanced Settings and make sure both Device 0 and Device 1 Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if available".
Also check Secondary IDE Chennel.

Let me know if this helps, and we'll go from there.
