Exclamation media test failure-check cable!

Gidday, my last computer was stolen around 1 month ago and Im using an older - Dell Computer
OptiPlex GX150
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU 1133MHz
Processor Speed 1.10 GHz
Memory (RAM) 256 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Operating System Version 5.1.2600
and when I boot-up there is the message "media test failure-check cable!"
I`ve not yet opened up a pc before, so I am reluctant to do so.
Getting to the point! When I checked out "devices" in the control panel, it says there is a:
(lite-on ltn486 48x max DVD/CD-R),
though I cant play dvd`s or burn anything to disc!
Device properties says:
ManafacturerStandard CD-ROM drives)
Location: Location 0 (0)
Device status: This device is working properly.

Does the (Location 0) relate to the error message at start-up?
Or was the DVD/CD-R drive removed at some stage in the past and replaced with a standard CD-ROM drive, yet it is still listed in devices?

Christ, I hope that all makes sense!

- any replies appreciated.

Spadgebah.

Hya spadgebah , welcome to PCHF.

That could be a number of thing like a bad IDE cable or controller maybe , but first i would try to reset youre bios to default settings to see if that helps.
