Default DVD speeds

This is possibly more of a DVD than a DVD drive question. When a blank DVD says it is 1x to 4x is this just the burn/record speed or is it generally the max read speed too?

Being a bit of an avid tennis fans I have been taping the US open, lack of HDD space means I have to burn on to DVD's. But I like to put the files back on my HDD when I watch so that it is a bit faster when jumping around the video.

So 4x write takes about 15 minutes. I thought DVD read would be 16x [as per dvd drive spec] which means copy from dvd to HDD should take 4 minutes or so ... but it takes 15 minutes.

so are the dvd's 4x read as well or is my drive a bit odd.

regards
Eric

:-D Erik, I know absolutely nothing about DVD Speed, but I would kill for a copy of those DVDs. My husband missed about half of the Open, and was really bummed about it.

You had a great idea. If I'd only thougt about it at the time.

I know lots of the guys around here know all the ins and outs of the hardware side of things. They'll check in on your question directly.

Have a look in youre device manager and double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and check by rightclicking on the IDE channels and selecting properties , on the advanced tab after "transfer mode" see if "DMA if availeble" is selected.

"DMA if available" is already selected.

Unfortuantely I don't have any non-video DVD's to test this out on. However when I use a program lile DVD Decrypter to copy the video over to the HDD, it takes about the 16 minutes ... not sure if there is a bottle neck with decrypting [cpu processes certainly is not strained].

tjnbarbour, being an avid tennis fan my self I certainly don't mind sharing, I am in Australia and we only got the finals anyway. I have
Federer Vs Agassi
Federer Vs Hewitt
Agassi Vs Ginepri
Clijsters Vs Sharapova
Clijsters Vs Pierce
Pierce Vs Dementiava
Federer Vs Nalbandian
If your really really interested I can point you to some sites which sell the matches ... ripoff if you ask me, well not actually, they cost about 10US dollars a match so if you only want the 1 match its ok but if you want alot like me then its not worth it.

:-D Thanks Eric, you're a doll, I just have to make sure that I am not violating any rules at PCHF, copyrights and all that. Actually for $10 a piece if it was his Christmas Present doesn't seem that bad, of course he wouldn't get ANYthing else. LOL

I'll check with Hengis and get back with you about sharing, Cheers M8
