I had a PC built for work and have never had any music or sounds from it. Thought it might be that there are no speakers, so I just bought them. Do I need to install anything to activate them? A sound card seems like it might be one thing.

You will need a CD-ROM drive capable of playing music CDs. If you have that just plug in your speakers and put the CD in. When the Windows XP wizard comes up select the option about playing back the music, and WMP (or whatever is default) will open and play your CD.
for better options with any media player, a sound card is hisghly reccomended, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, just your standard 2 channel card would be better than the phono jack on your cd drive
