I've had my pc for about 2 yrs now and i've only noticed recently that my supposed dvd drive wont play dvds (it also wouldn't play a couple of cds, but they would work in my cd-rw so i didnt mind)
When i put a dvd into the drive the thing lights up like its processing or sumthing and i hear the disk spin a bit, but then nothing. I can't even go through "my computer" to get to it. I've now noticed that windows lists it as a cd-drive under type, although its name is dvd drive (d.
Any ideas on whats going wrong?

Btw im running windows xp sp2 and the dvd drive is a samsung sd-616t that came w/ the pc. Thanks for any help you can give me

have you tried un-installing and re-installing youre dvd drive?
Go to system/hardware/devicemanager then rightclick on youre dvd-drive and select un-install , reboot youre pc and let windows re-install it.
Maybe it helps but it is also possible that the drive needs to be cleaned or maybe it has just had it..

Before i try that, could you tell me if i need an ASPI layer?. Ive looked around a bit and from what i can gather (which admittedly isnt all that much) some systems need one and aparently i havent (ran a layer check utility and it said the things werent available.

Also do you have dvd decoding software? ie..like windvd intervideo..etc?

Installing an aspi layer did bugger all , and as for decoding software.... i've got something called cyberlink power dvd which came w/ the system, but i figured that the dvds would play in WMP. But if it were just decoding software i needed wouldn't i still be able to see the disk info in my computer?
