Take a paperclip and unwind it. There will be a small whole somewhere on the CD-ROM drive. Push the paperclip in until the drive opens enough to pull it open with your hand. Also, try rebooting your computer, it happened once to me, and rebooting gave it power again (yet another sign I need a new PSU).

Hi Leng,

I just posted a response to another of your postes regarding your computer shutting itself off. Did these two things start happening around the same time?

thanks for the response. for the CD ROM, tried the paper clip, it works luckily sometimes, however, when it closes, it wont open again. Does it mean that the unit needs replacement already? sorry am not so familiar with computer/technical terms, but what's PSU that you mentioned?

On the shutdown, no, it is not simultaneous. CD Rom has been a problem that we use it on pure luck that it will open. I normally use it for installations, my kids use it for their music, however they stopped using it because as it is it wont open.
PC shutsdown even if you have just turned it on, sometimes when the kids are playing games offline or online, then it shutsdown making the kids mad. However, I noticed that it seldom shutsdown when my daughter is on her friendster.
There's a log on the AVG that PC has Trojan HOrse virus, it's just there, tried pressing Heal but doesn't respond. I have to try the one recommended here to turn off system restore first and delete. thanks.

Ya, it won't open again, because the gears have already been turned to open it once, however, if it gets power again it will work (they are not spring loaded, so once they have turned they are stuck there until something else moves them back). Try rebooting your computer. As far as the PSU goes, it was an offtopic comment up until now. A PSU is a power supply unit. If your computer is randomly shutting down and your CD-Rom drive isn't working it might be a power supply issue. It may be faulty or may not be supplying enough power.

Hi Leng,

Spacekid is right, but like I said in your other post, if it isn't the power supply, and since you are showing a trojan, I would tend to be more suspicious of the infection. When you turn of system restore, make sure that you next boot up in Safe Mode, by tapping the F8 key when you first start up the computer, until you get a screen that gives you options, select Safe Mode and click OK.

Then try running AVG again.

If that doesn't work, post the name of the Trojan(s) that you are identifying and we can get you to the removals for the specific Trojan(s) you are infected with.

You didn't mention whether or not the CD just suddenly stopped working, or if this has been a problem the whole time you have had the PC.

If the problem is not the power supply, the infection may have corrupted your CD drivers. You may need to reinstall them.

But first check the power, and then move on to the virus', and then you can worry about that.

:-) T

Hi T, Hi Spacekids3750. and hello also to the others who have been so great in helping people like me and sharing their talents and expertise. Really appreciate your responses/assistance. Trojan is out now - I've done it through the safemode - no infection registered. However, I am thinking that yes, probably my CD drive had been infected early on because this PC had virus before and I just asked someone to check and clean it for me but the constant shutdown remained. My nephew also had everything re-installed (he, actually referred me to this very helpful site), but after awhile, it again started to auto shutdown. Sad to say I couldn't even re-install my printer now - and this, I still have to resolve. Can't do with re-installation as such my CD Rom wont work yet.

How would I know and check whether the PSU is not sufficient?

Looking forward to your help again. (so sorry, it seems I have the most problematic PC among the new members plus being someone with so little knowledge about computer) But.... with your help and with this site, I'm learning little by little - thanks guys, you will be reading more from me.
