It is also possible that the IDE cable that connects to the cdrom is faulty... Could you open up your PC case and disconnect the IDE and power cable that connects to the device.

Then reconnect the cables along with a different power cable (if possible)

If you have a spare IDE cable then you could exchange them as a test.

Hi Zimbo, thanks, ok I will try doing it this weekend ( yet - am a working mom with no helper, reason for missing your responses, guys). (sorry for my ignorance, but what's an IDE? yuk!)

Take a look at this tutorial, well at the pictures anyway. The IDE cable is the big grey cable that connects the CDROM to the motherboard.

This thread was left unfinished. We never got an answer from Leng as to the results from those tests. There were lots of other fixes yet to try, my hunch is that she was feeling a little overwhelmed and over tech'd.

If you find yourself, here or on any other forum, and the information is feeling like it's in a different language, don't be afraid to ask for clearer instructions. We tech's sometimes forget how scary all those wierd cards and wires can be to someone who isn't familiar, not to mention how alien the terminology can feel to other people. So Speak Up non-techs of the world, and we here at PCHF will work hard to make sure our instructions aren't too scary.
