Default [Answered] Trying to install CD Burner, having problems....

I'm trying to install a CD burner into my computer as a slave drive. The Master drive has always worked, but when i tried to install the CD Burner in the pc, neither drive works, and unless i have the ide cable unplugged from the burner, the burner doesn't recieve power! I've set the jumper pins to what they should be, and I am now totally stumped, because now my original cd-rom doesn't work now! Any ideas??

Welcome Zman

Could you give us a bit more info...

For example
  • How many hard drives do you have connected and is it connected to IDE0
  • Are you connecting the two CD-ROMs to the same IDE cable (IDE1)

Is the other drive that you have a standard cd-rom drive, if so I would set that drive to slave and connect it to the same IDE cable as the hard drive. Then set you CD-Burner to master and connect it to the secondary IDE cable. (so it will be on its own)

I only have one hard drive, but it's connected separately to the motherboard if that was the question you were asking. The other CD Rom is a standard one, and yes I am trying to connect the 2 together with the same IDE cable (if that's even a good idea, i don't know) Thanks for the help

Ok, now can you set the standard cd-rom jumper to slave and plug it into the same IDE cable as the hard drive.

Then set the jumper on the CD-Burner to master and leave it connect to the second IDE cable. (so the cd-burner should be the only device on that cable)

Now try boot the machine and see if they work.

Actually I do have a question i just thought of, what if the ide cable (the slave plug) doesn't reach all the way to the standard cd rom because there's a bit of a gap between the hd and the cdrom, would i have to get a longer cable?
