Default [Fixed] Bit of a problem with IDE cables

Hi all,

I have a problem that has occurred recently after installing a new CD-RW (with mem card reader) and a 16x IDE DVD ROM.

The setup inside my computer is a A7n8X-X MoBo and a Hitachi IC35L120AVV207-1 Deskstar 120Gb Hdd.

I have a brand new 90CM rounded ATA 133 IDE Cable which is connected to the Mother board via the Blue Socket and Primary Connecter.

The cables gray connecter is connected to my Hard drive.

My two CD drives are connected via a cable with 3 black connecters to the Secondary IDE slot.

My problem is that i get an error message during bootup saying "No 80 conductor cable installed) and the animated bootup screen takes forever to finally load. When XP does load up the operations are performing much slower than usual and not smoothly as my XP3200+ should.

Another little problem i have noticed is when i am importing/Copying a CD my computer will restart halfway through the procedure.

I have no idea to a solution to this and need help badly.

Thanks.

Default Bit of a problem with IDE cables

Hi

I think the problem is that your secondary devices are either ATA133 and are looking for an 80 pin IDE cable OR they are not ATA133 and they are complaining about the fact that you have an 80 pin IDE cable connected to them.

OR the same answer but applied to your Hard drive - is the rounded cable an 80 pin one or a 40 ??

Default Bit of a problem with IDE cables

the new rounded cable has 39 little slots in the end bit has 80 wires connecting to it so i would guess its a 80 pin.

How do i distinguish a 80 pin from a 40 pin? Is it the number of wires leading to the connecter?

Thanks for your reply Mazz.

oh i see

In that case, the secondary IDE cable is a 40 pin and the primary is a 80 pin
