Default Not recognizing dvd-r

Well, I hope I can get some help with this.

I recently attempted to use my dvd-r drive to put some files onto a dvd. When I put an empty disk into the drive, it does not recognize it as a dvd-r disk. I have performed several suggested solutions to try and fix this, but nothing has worked as of yet.

This is the device listed in my manager.
DVD-RW 16X TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B

I attempted to update the firmware, but when I ran the program, it said my system was not configured for that drive, and could not complete the operation.

I am kind of at my wits end, and I am hoping someone can offer some assistance.

I was using Nero 9 basic.

I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, changed nothing.

My computer recognizes the drive, and I can access cd's / dvd's that I put in it, and I can open the empty disk from my computer, they are just not recognized when I attempt to burn to them.
