Default burning problems! Help!!!!

ok so heres the deal....bought a new dvd burner, a lite-on DH20A4P, which came with now software or anything at all, and i bought a spindle of RiData Dvd-R's. Installed the drive, no disc in the drive, it'll give me the "burn these files to disc" option included in windows. but when i have a disc in, i lose that option. the drive does work though, i know this because i can burn image files w/ powerISO and i can use roxio to burn video dvds, but i dont know why i cant just copy/paste and write the files as a data disc like i do on any other computer.
These are some of my specs:
Windows XP Pro 2002 SP3
Dell Dimension DIM4600
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz
512 MB RAM

Also, I burned a DVD with Roxio and the output quality on this dvd was pretty bad, really blocky and whatnot....can someone suggest something better to use?

Any Help For Either Problem Would Be Greatly Appreciated!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

another suggestion as to different burning software would be nero, here is a link for the trial version. Nero - Trial Version

the full version is not free but i believe it is well worth it

Here are two freeware cdr / dvd burners that are worth a look.

I have been using ImgBurn a lot just lately in preference to Nero 7...
