Default CD/DVD drive problems

I have a Compaq Presario, which runs XP. The original CD drive that came with the PC always gave me an error message when I tried to burn a CD. So I figured the drive was bad, so I bought a new Phillips DVD/CD drive. Now whenever I burn or rip a CD via Windows Media Player (any version) everything stops responding. I have to restart with Task Manager to continue my burning or ripping. I bought a new MP3 player which came with Rhapsody. When I use Rhapsody media to burn or rip I encounter the same not reponding problem with all programs (IE, Rhapsody or anything else).

Hi uqdah, welcome to the PCHF.

One thing you might want to check is to go to Device Manager > Expand out IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > the next steps you want to do for both Primary and Secondary IDE Channel Right click on each and select Properties > Advanced Settings > and ensure that Transfer Mode is set to DMA if available.

Let me know if they were set to PIO or DMA by default. - if PIO was set, this will fix your problem. If DMA was set, then there's somethign else causing the issue.

Thank you for the advice. Both were set to DMA by default!
