Default DVD burner does not play CD's

Hello,
My DVD burner on my PC works great when I burn dvd's but recently when I tried to burn a CD I kept freezing. I tried to play a bunch of different CD's but none of them work.
I can burn DVD's I can play DVD's but it will not play or burn CD's???
There is no brand name on the DVD. The driver is "DVD generic", at least that's what programs like belarc and SIW.exe tell me and also thats what it says in the device manager drivers.
Thanks in advance for any help.

It sometimes pays to spend a little bit more and get a branded burner. Have a look here DVD Writers : Components at cheap prices from Novatech.co.uk good quality and reasonable prices.
I had one once that I thought was FEMALE because It did what it wanted, when it wanted, if it felt like it. that was a cheapy unbranded one
