They both use the same power and bus connectors so there's not a problem in that respect. The problem is that they are different sizes (in general) a hard drive is 3.5" and an optical drive is 5.25".

You may be able to find an enclosure that will support both, however short of leaving the hard drive loose inside the enclosure and trying to connect it (which isn't a good idea) you would have to find one that specifies it can be used for both.

See, i bought an external dvd writer which didn't work, so i thought of getting a Pioneer DVD writer and putting that in an enclosure. I think that this seems a better option than getting an dedicated external drive again with some cheapo drive in it. It might be slightly more expensive, but i feel that this is the better option.

What does everyone else think ?

I agree, I tend to think buy cheap, buy twice. I don't like using generic stuff and I'd rather pay that little bit extra to get exactly what I want, I was in the same situation recently when I needed an external drive for my mac, I bought an enclosure and an NEC DVD-RW and it's been solid so far.
