Default Problems with my optical drive

Hi there.
I am new in here and I really dont know if what I ask is somewhere else.
My problem is my optical drive. It is a (TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R5112)
The problem is that whenever I insert an empty cd or dvd-rom It will not read it. It is if it dosent recoknise the disc´s. Now it can play music cd´s and dvd movies.
Now i have to clean my system and i really need to take copy´s of all my pictures. But it is a bit hard when it can read or burn empti disc´s.
I have tried to uninstall and then reinstall my burner program, and it dosent help.
And when ever I try to klik burn, it just says put in an empty disc.
Those cd-roms I use worked in the past but not now.
Can someone please help????. And I dont hav a lot of computer experience, I dont have any.
ps. Sorry for any spelling mistakes.

Hi,

You say you ininstalled the burner software, then re-installed it. Did you also try doing the same with the burner itself in Device Manager?

You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager > find the CD drive and right-click & un-install. Reboot and let Windows re-install it automatically.

So now I have tried that, but it didnt work. I un-installed my cd-drive and its the same as before.
By the way, when I insert an empty cd-rom (nothing happens) and go to "my computer" then if I dubble clik on my cd-drive it says "D:/ Is not availlable. Wrong function" I dont know if this is the right english term and I dont know if this is usefull or not.
It use to work before.

Have a look back in Device manager and see if it was installed correctly. If not, add it manually thru add/remove hardware. If it is a modular drive, take it out and re-seat it firmly.
