Default Both CD burners not working

My machine has an onboard CDRW and an attached DVD/CD RW. Neither of the units will burn cds but the joint DVD/CD burner will burn DVDs. They have worked perfectly in the past but both have packed up at the same time. I am not aware of having made any changes which may have caused it. My software is WinXP SP2 and I have tried both Nero and Ashampoo.
The programs recognise the discs and go through the whole burn routine as normal but the disc isn't burned.
