Default [Answered] Recording a VHS tape to my notebook??

Hey guys. I hope I am in the right forum. But, all my problems thus far have always been answered and fixed!

My ? this time is I have a HP Pavillion zv6000 noptebook that is about 4 or 5 months old. I am trying to figure out how I can used the notebook's DVD writer to record a VHS tape directly between the VHS player and my notebook? Is that possible with the right connection/wire? I am not sure what I need, if this can be done. Which also begs the question if I need any special software to do it as well. I have once before when I first got the notebook I transferred a tv program to my Digital 8 tape onto my "camcorder" and then connected my video camera to my lap top with, I think, a firewire or an S-video cord...I can not remember for sure. At any rate, I got the show from the video camera to my lap top ok, or maybe just burned it straight onto a dvd from the video camera. However, I only could transfer like one hour long show. So, is there a way I can connect the VCR directly to my notebook and transfer a 2 hour tape strtaight onto my computer?

Thank u so much, guys, 4 the reliable help!

Hi Jim,

I use a USB TV Tuner to connect to my video recorder. You can use Windows Movie maker to record, but I find MGI VideoWave or similar gives you better compression, such as DivX. Raw Movie data tends to take up a lot of disk space, so compression is important.

If you dont want the expense of buying a vcr/dvr combo unit, you can get a stand alone video converter, and use your computer and dvd burner. But the tapes have to be converted from analog, to digital. These units are available in usb, or pci interface, ranging in price from 30$ to several hundred, some with the required software, some without. They are available from most online stores, likeTiger direct, Newegg...ect. Unless you buy a really high tech system capable of high speed dubbing and recording, the conversion is in real time.

Edit: Sorry guys, i guess we were all typing at the same time.
