Default Dvds I burn cannot be read by any computer

I have been backing up some of my files on dvds and having no problems burning them. However when I tried reading from the dvds they do not work, the dvd drive does not recognise the disk. I tried reading them on another computer and had the same problem. I am using nero 7 and have also tried sonic record-now but both burn the dvds but they still cannot be read. I have also tried burning at 2x speed (the lowest option) but nothing seems to work. It used to work fine and dvds which I burned a while ago still work.

I tried burning a cd and that worked fine, even at 24x.

Any Ideas?

Hi Ozz, it's most likely the media itself

Have you tried a different brand?

Are you talking about making backups with a backup program, or just copying files to disk so you have a backup copy of them? Some backup programs copy files in a proprietery format, and you cant open them in windows. You have to use the restore function in the program to open them. Im not familar with using nero for backup, you might want to check the help files to see if this is the problem. You should be able to open the files without actually doing a restore.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. I am not using the backup option, just copying the files to disk. I have been using the same brand dvds for a while and never had a problem, I have also used them on another computer so I know they are not the problem.
Starting to think it must be a hardware problem, maybe the laser is starting to go.

You might try using one of the cleaning kits before you start replacing hardware. A dirty lens could cause burn errors, and if the lead in tracks arent burned correctly, it wont recognize the disk. . Another thing to check is your burn options. Some drives wont read an open session disk, i think Nero calls it multi session. Try doing one with it set to finalize the disk, if you havent already. Also if you have the Nero set up disk, maybe try uninstalling, and reinstalling it. I have one burning program that starts acting squirrely now and then, and a reinstall fixes it. Just a few things to check that wont cost much.

Edit: You might also try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive and drivers for it.
