Arrow [Answered] Dvd Decrypter Help

I have some questions.

#1.) We bought DVD X Copy awhile ago off ebay, just a downloaded program, no physical CDs or anything. Its been working fine when we make back ups of our DVDs, until recently. We heard that newer DVDs won't burn, and we need a decrypter. Is there a free decrypter out there that someone recommends?

#2.) Is it illegal to rent a movie and then burn it for my own use?

#3.) How do we know if a move needs to be run thru the decrypter without wasting time, like putting it thru the dvd copy, and then running into problems, cancel the process, run it thru the decrypter, and then put it thru the dvd copy again?

Just so I'm clear, I'm burning DVDs for my own personal use, and I'm not doing anything illegal. Thanks for the help!

Natalie

Hey there ndbigler

This post is kinda on the verge of breaking our rules but I will help to explain some things, basically what you are trying to do is illegal.
  1. Its a vicious circle, companies keep updating their copy protection and people keep finding a way to get around it. The answer to your question is yes, there will be a decrypter out there but we cannot assist with finding it due to the nature in which you intend to use it.
  2. Yes it is ILLEGAL to rent a movie and then make a copy of it, even though it is just for personal use.
A site that can help with both questions 1 and 3 is - http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/
You will also get an explanation on legallity there.

The only time it is legally allowed to make a copy of a DVD is when you purchase a game (DVD) and make a "backup" copy of it.

Thanks for the info Zimbo. I didn't mean for it to sound like I'm burning just to burn. What I meant is that I am making back up copies of my DVDs for myself. Unless, what I'm doing, IS illegal. I guess I better clarify what I'm doing, and someone better tell me if what I'm doing is wrong. I don't want to be getting into trouble. When we buy a movie, a DVD, I burn a copy of it for US, and put the original away as the back up copy so that our DVDs stay in good condition. (We have two kids)... Is that illegal?

And then I guess I'm confused. If what I'm doing is NOT illegal, as described above, wouldn't a decrypter be a good thing to have if I can't make a back up of something we bought?

Thanks for that link. Its pretty useful. It also looks like DVD X Copy isn't so good to have anymore. I'll probably have to look into buying another program.

I also believe it is legal to make a backup copy of a DVD.

here is a small disclaimer from dvd digest that should explain it all if ur still bafled

While making backups of DVDs that you already own for personal use is perfectly legal (as it falls under fair use), it is illegal if you make backups for commercial gain (such as selling your backups, or selling/returning your original after making a backup). This guide is present for educational purposes only, and does not condone any form of piracy.
