Angry [Answered] Another insert blank CD problem

Hi guys, great site that I have used for sometime but never needed to register because I have always gotten the answer I was looking for just by reading. But now the time has come!

I am also getting an insert blank CD on my NEC CD/DVD RW even though I am 100% sure that I have a blank in. I have flashed my firmware, uninstalled and reinstalled, used system restore, and ran spybot. None of these attempts have seemed to help. The RW will read DVD's, but not CD's that is why I feel confident that the problem is in my PC not the RW itself. It is showing in the BIOS as well.

I am using Nero 7 Ultra, Winamp Pro, Windows MP 9, and Roxio ez media creator. I am at wits end, Help!!

Thanks again for all that you folks do, this is a fantastic site.

Hi RoadWildCat,

Welcome to PCHF!

Is this a new drive? Have you ever written to a cd with this writer. There's the possibility that it only writes to DVD's. This isn't usually the case but I've seen a couple devices that do that.

In any case we have a wonderful team of tech experts that can help you with your problem so I'm certain we'll get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for the reply ron,

No, this is a drive I have installed from another PC when I got this one. I put both DVD drives in myself (RW and ROM). They have worked just fine until last week. I have both jumpers set for cable select and nothing new as far as programs. The RW just seemed to stop reading CD's, the reading of DVD's is fine.

It could be that the lens for cd's is damaged or dirty. (they have separete lenses for cd's and for dvd's)

Joe, thanks you may have just answered my question. When I insert a CD I can hear a very faint clicking sound. Could this be that the lense isn't moving?

Could be , maybe dust is opstructing its way. But it is also possible that if the lens is dirty or damaged that it is just franticly moving around to try and read/find data and causing a clicking sound then.
